People around the world now have an awareness of energy efficiency. The good news is the UK government offers a free boiler for needy families under the policy called ECO programme (Energy Company Obligation).
What is free boiler grant scheme? It is a programme which was introduced in 2013 aimed at assisting millions of low-income households (those who spend over 10% of their income on fuel). They have to heat their homes using old, damaged, and inefficient boilers. Therefore, the country’s administration orders energy giants such as Scottish Power, British Gas, and EDF Power to participate in this programme, regarding funding.
ECO was established to replace the Warm Front which was no longer available in 2013. For Northern Ireland residents, there is a Warm Homes Grants. While ECO is for England, Wales, and Scotland residents.
How to apply?
To get a free boiler from the government, you must live in either a private or rented apartment. But if you rent accommodation, you need to get permission from your landlord. Also, you are not entitled to free boiler grants scheme if you live in a council property.
The next question will be who qualifies for this scheme. Pension Credit and Child Tax Credit qualify automatically without additional criteria.
Your boiler’s efficiency should be less than 86% (usually over five years old and are rated C and G). A and B rated can be replaced if the condition is damaged or if it is not working correctly (making a noise, need repeated pressing, and so on). Also, boilers must run on gas, LPG, or oil.
What if you don’t qualify?
No worries. You can still have a new A-rated boiler installed for £20 a month. There is a loan service you can contact to find out about the plan with repayments made over 3,5 or 10 years.
ECO was supposed to run until 2015. However, the scheme has been extended to 2018 thanks to its popularity. Make sure you apply to the government boiler scheme before it ends. It is easy to do and has great benefit.
